This colossal monument, which stands in front of Moscow's Ukraina Hotel, commemorates the one hundred fiftieth anniversary of Taras Grigorievich Shevchenko (1814-1861), a celebrated Ukrainian painter and poet who first came to the city in 1847. It is the work of sculptors M. N. Gritsuk and Y. L. Senkevich, with architects A. S. Fuzhenko, A.A. Snitsaryov, and Y.A. Chekanok.
