MOSCOW: TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is located in Alexander Garden adjacent to the walls of the Kremlin. It is dedicated to the memory of those who fell in defense of their homeland during World War II. The ashes deposited in the tomb were taken from a mass grave in the vicinity, and the eternal flame was lit on the eve of 8 May 1967--the day Soviets won a decisive victory over fascist Germany. Many newlywed couples continue the Soviet tradition of having their pictures taken at this hallowed site.
