Designed by architects Postnik and Barma, St. Basil's exterior was originally white and was not polychromed until the seventeenth century, at which time the iron roof covering was replaced with multicolored tiles. The basic plan of the cathedral is crucform, with the main central church bounded on its principal axes by four octagonal churches, and by two square and two irregularly shaped churches on its diagonals.
