As you pass the Cathedral Church of St. Michael the Archangel and enter Cathedral Square, look to your right and you will see the impressive Ivan the Great Bell Tower. Constructed of white stone in a series of octagonal tiers and crowned with a brilliant gold cupola, the structure dates from the early sixteenth century--although its height was increased under the reign of Boris Godunov. The adjacent campanile was erected from 1532 to 1543.
